Things Every Teacher Should Consider When Writing an IEP

Writing an IEP requires input from a number of different parties in a student's life including their family, general and special educators, therapists, and the student. The special education teacher should also consider the student's environment, long and short term goals, and student likes and dislikes.

The following 3 questions can help special educators write IEPs that include the most effective and efficient forms of Assistive Technology devices and applications:

1. What is the intended outcome of the use of the educational application or device?

2. Is the educational application or assistive technology device likely to fulfill its purpose?

3. Can the educational application or device be used as an alternative to traditional classroom activities to enhance student participation?
