Integrating Augmentative Communication into the IEP

Augmentative communication devices enable students to access the academic curriculum, build relationships with their peers, and participate in various aspects of the community in which they live. The goals and objectives within the Individualized Education Program guide augmentative communication instruction. Students should be assessed prior to annual IEP meetings to determine whether augmentative communication devices could potentially help the student better access the curriculum.

If a child is determined to require an augmentative communication device, the components of the device must be outlined within the IEP. The IEP should also include information about the use of the device to ensure the student it given opportunities to practice using the device within their educational context.

Augmentative communication devices are not a goal or objective within the IEP, rather they are a means by which the student can better meet the goals and objectives within the IEP.
